"I've never sailed the Amazon,
I've never reached Brazil;
But the Don and Magdalena,
They can go there when they will!

Yes, weekly from Southampton
Great steamers, white and gold,
Go rolling down to Rio
(Roll down--roll down to Rio! ).
And I'd like to roll to Rio
Some day before I'm old!

I've never seen a Jaguar,
Nor yet an Armadill--
He's dilloing in his armour,
And I s'pose I never will,

Unless I go to Rio
These wonders to behold--
Roll down--roll down to Rio--
Roll really down to Rio!
Oh, I'd love to roll to Rio
Some day before I'm old!"

The Beginning of the Armadilloes. -- Rudyard Kipling

The Escola Americana celebrated its 60th Anniversary.  A formal affair took place at the Grand Daddy of them all, the Copacabana Palace Hotel, where "The Road to Rio" was filmed. The celebration was on June 6, 1997.  Later, on June 11, a party was held at the Escola Americana.  We are awaiting receipt of information and photos from those in attendance.  So if you happened to "roll down to Rio" for the celebration, please write a letter about the event and email us your photos.

Copacabana Palace Hotel - "Flying Down to Rio"

Last year, actually, it was ten years ago, my brother, two sisters, and I all rolled down to check out the 50th Anniversary.  We hadn't been back in 22 years.  Everything, from the weather to the music in the night clubs, was perfect.  Except no one told us it was a formal affair, and our luggage was lost at Galeão.  Yeah ... it was perfect.  We were "matandoing saudades" everywhere.

We were transported back in time and everyone was there.  Dr. Brown, Miss Vasconcellos, Mrs. Vera Martins, Miss Collares, Mrs. Bridge, Mrs. Boone, Valdir Boccardo, Cabral, Hank Font, James Connell, Gela Grote, Abaete Valverde, John Bash, Nancy Belt, Jane Damude, Barbara Moorby, Virginia O'Donnell, Robert Morris, Suelena Viera, Sheila and Sharon O'Day, Ernestina Onto, Betty Taylor, Nancy Bertão, Carla and Leslie French, Drucy Knapp, Ann and Sue Strickland, Lynn Udall, Pierre Simonpetri, Artie Burns, Astri Sweet, her brother, Eric Sweet, Corinne Coffin, Pedro Haegler, Bob Feith, Rogerio Deny, Roberto Vega, and Robin, Mercy, Bruce and Scot Stirling, just to name a few.  I have the whole thing on video!  Look for parts here soon.

If you attended the 60th Anniversary at the Copacabana Palace Hotel, we need to hear from you.  Please send photos of the events!
