Dr. Brown Email:

May 19, 1998 - Just saw your email traffic and thought I'd send you a note.  Just had a call from Miriam Baum who will be spending a month here at Duke University taking care of her health.  She is still on crutches from the leg injury she had when we were with her in Phoenix last August.  She will be attending to that as an outpatient.  She is staying at a local hotel and we will get a chance to see a lot of her and, I hope, help in her recovery.  She writes that Jacques Borisewitz (and wife, of course!) is expecting first child somewhere beginning of June.  Jacques must also be somewhere in the great classes of the late '60s.  [Webmaster's note: 1968]
I don't know how many people know that Desmond Cole, who was EA headmaster from 1960 to 1964, just befoe me, lives here in Durham, NC.  His son, Peter, EA, '78 or so, is coming next week to spend some time with his father.  We will have luncheon together next Monday.  Desmond, and wife Charity, are retired here. Desmond left EA to become the head of the UN International School in NYC and then the head of Allen Stevenson school until his retirement some 10-15 years ago.  He is well and we get to play golf together once in a while.  Charity is Americna-Brasilian.  They get to return to Rio regularly, having just been there two months ago.  While Miriam is here, we will all have tea or something liquid together.
My wife, I and our 14-year-old granddaughter, Natalia, are going to spend two weeks in Rio at the end of June.   As a present for her 15th birthday, we told her we would take her anywhere in the world she wanted to go.  Her father, Gerald, EA, '73, must have pressured her to opt for Rio to see where he was raised and to meet his friends and teachers.  Natalia was born in Rio at the Clinica Sao Vicente in Gavea in 1983 while her father and mother were there (she wanted to be close to them at that important moment.)  Gerald worked for Arthur Andersen then.  He is now the Northwest sales manager for Digital's web search engine, Alta Vista, and lives in Kirkland, Washington, near Seattle.
For later EA kids who knew Mr. Mick Morse, who died prematurely some 7-8 years ago (he was Middle School Principal, High School Principal, and one year as acting Headmaster from 1975 to 1989 when he left to be head of the American School in Bilbao, Spain, where he died), Shirley and I will be going to St. Petersburg, Florida, on May 30 to attend his widow's wedding to someone she met there after her return from Spain.
Adrian, our daughter who lives in Washington, DC, and is in touch with I don't know how many local EA alumni, will be attending the Barulho Brasileiro in August in California.  Sorry, but I won't be able to make it.  Other commitments.   Adrian continues to practice medicine, now in the city having moved her practice from Alexandria to a new office nearer her home.  The home page has resulted in lots of email to me from EA alumni.  It's so great to hear from them.
Keep up the good work and keep the news of EA doings in front of us. We appreciate your efforts and the good memmories and good times that we can relive because of your help.  All the best to your folks and to your siblings. Abracos, Gilbert C. Brown 2417gilbrown@msn.com

Initial message from Dr. Brown:

It was wonderful to hear from you and to learn of the EA homepage. Great work for which we all thank you. I guess you found my picture on the article I wrote for an internet magazine, Teachers Internet Pages. Believe it or not, I haven't seen that yet. Although I have email, I depend upon Gerald, our son, for email information. Gerald works for Digital Equipment Corporation, DEC, selling their 'search engine,' Alta Vista. He just spent a week in Brasil, in Rio, Sao Paulo and Brasilia making a pitch to resellers there. I sent him the information you sent me and he will look up your home page. I don't have access to the internet or to www yet. I have only email from which I generate all the communications I need for the consultancies I do with international schools all over the world.
My wife and I are attending the reunion of the EA classes of 1965-1968 at The Buttes Hotel in Phoenix from August 8-10. I know that some of your sisters are also planning to attend, since you all live somewhere close. I hope I may see you there. If you come, bring your laptop and we'll look over what you have created!
It was great hearing from you. I hope I may see you soon.
All the best, with an abracao, Gilbert Brown 2417gilbrown@msn.com
