Hello All, This is Penny of  '66, and I am just reaching out to all to let you know that Tucson is still on the map in spite of "school restructuring."    If your school is considering something called SFA -- "Success For All" --  and you are told it is a "reading program,"don't believe it.   It is also called Roots and Wings.  Part of the kinder program is written by Lloyd Dunn.   Just say, "nao obrigada."   Why does life seem so much more simple overseas and such a constant battle here?   Thank you Bubba for such a nice site.   It is a stress reliever to read the comments here.  Oops, just changed that, didn't I?  I don't want feijão of rabbit from Portugal!  I want plain old Rio feijao!!!  Hugs to you all!!   Penny Stirling Johnson

Last night I watched an excellent movie by Bruno Barreto on the September 1969 kidnapping of American Ambassador Charles Elbrick in Rio. The movie is "Four Days in September" and it has been widely released in the US. I rented the video at my local video store. Not only is it good historically but it has great shots of Rio and the dialogue is primarily in portuguese with english subtitles. It sure brought back memories watching a padeiro deliver to the front door and many other occurences in the movie. Check it out.

Yet another new alumni service! Please register on the newly created EA Alumni Email Listserv. Registering will get you on the EA Alumni email list and you'll never miss out on anything again! Please spread the word.

Just because you register here does NOT mean you don't have to register on the Alumni Registration page. For the record, we consider the Alumni Registration page the more important of the two. This one is just added convenience and pleasure!

Check out the new page created tonight for feijoada recipes. Seems to be a popular subject by the number of entries already on-line.

It has come up on the Wednesday night chat that we would like a fejoada page to collect recipes. What do you think?

I was riding my bike in Sao Paulo na Bandeirantes with a friend two weekends ago. By chance there was another rider who was in the group. Incredibly, also a EA graduate. He gave me the site address. This is great! Would like to get in contact with anyone from Class of '79. Saudacoes sulistas, Richard Drennan

More stuff going up! We're growing. Check out this tropical paradise, abencoado por Deus. Look for more soon. Listen for the school song. Those of you who never had the pleasure of watching and listening to Ms. Vera Martins play it on the piano really missed something! Watch for photos of Ms. Vera, too! We heard she was at the Barulho in Monterey. Tristeza nao tem fim, felicidade sim . . . .

The video capture card has been busy. See the photos (unretouched so far) of old EA Leblon friends, mainly from the Class of 1970. The photos were taken from VIDEOS of the yearbooks I reviewed at the EA library in Rio. Not quite the quality I was hoping for, but once I retouch them in Photoshop they should look a little better.

The 1993 Ft. Lauderdale Reunion is starting to take shape and the first page is finished.  I finally hooked up a video capture card and my scanner, so look soon for a downloadable sound file of the galera in Phoenix singing the official school song! From now on you'll be able to sing along! Plus, I can now upload the videos taken in 1993 from yearbooks in the EA library. If your photo appears here and you don't want it here, let me know and it'll come down.  Follow the link below and be patient.   More is on the way.

Just heard from Cathy Asper, EA'66 or '67, who also attended the Barulho Brasileiro in Monterey. She reports the Barulho organizers want to "join forces" with the organizers of the EA Reunions (all classes) and have one big event. The Barulho organizers have been "in business" for many years and are good at what they do. This would allow "traditions" to be maintained, old memorabilia to be exchanged, and a dissemination of general school history to succeeding classes. Most inmportantly, they have a huge computerized list of alumni addresses and phone numbers. Ours may already have "incorporated" theirs, I'm not sure. Anyway, it's the topic of discussion. O que e que voces pensam?

The following message was sent from Chris Ybarra (87), who is in California.  He asked me (Karl Johnson) to forward it to the addresses I have.  I think no one is missing from this address book...?

Cara amigos,

Greetings from Oakland, California, USA!  I hope that you stop from your busy schedule to read this important email.  I have collected the email addresses from as many people from the Class of 1987 that I could find. Therefore, I encourage you to forward this email to any other ex-students from EA of which you may be aware.

This weekend I went to Monterey, California to attend a feijoada in honor of the Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro.  The event was entitled Barulho Brasilheiro VI.   This party happens every three years and you can find out more details by pointing your web browser to: http://www.stirlinglaw.com/ea/barulho.htm.

The hotel was primeira classe and the city is one of the most picturesque in the world.  The committee who planned this event did an excellent job with the decorations as green and yellow streamers and balloons filled the hall. Samba was pumping from the speakers and the room was humming with the chatter of old friends reuniting.   Now, let me emphasize one thing here.  These were OLD FRIENDS!  Most of the people there that evening have known each other longer than we have been alive!!

In classic Class of 1987 style, entrei nesta festa de penetra.  I arrived late for registration but found a seat and ranguei de qualquer maneira.  Each table sat 10 people, at my table there were four other ladies from EA.  The rest were their husbands and the Mother of three of the ladies.  The four women were from the graduating class of 1962!  They screamed with delight when, before I sat down, I introduced myself and said I was from the Class of 1987.  I was the youngest person in the room.  As a matter of fact, I would bet that there was no one there from graduating classes in the 70's or beyond.  There was definitely no one there who graduated in the 80's or 90's.  The remarkable thing is that there were about 150 ex-students from EA in attendance!  I was totally amazed!  For the past two years I have marveled at the amount of class and school spirit we have demonstrated by keeping in touch via email.  But, what I learned that night is that many of the attendees were not as "wired" as we are and they have been in contact with each other for DECADES using all other methods of communication.

O rango estava bom demais.  Tinha ate farofa!  There was a silent auction and one of the items up for bid was a package of pao de queijo mix.  We sang the national anthems of Brasil and the United States.  I didn't find that too unusual but, they continued by singing the Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro's school song!   Yes, EA has a school song, check it out: http://www.stirlinglaw.com/ea/song.htm.    Perhaps more impressive was the fact that several of the guests knew the words of the school song by heart!  I was asked if we had sung the school song back when we were in high school and I had to admit we had lost that tradition.

At one point in the evening I looked through a yearbook that someone at my table had brought.   It was the CARIOCA 1962.  Back then, the school was in Leblon.    I immediately went to the faculty/teacher pages and was pleased to find pictures of Becker, Collares, and Flarys from 36 years ago!  Nossa!  They looked good and, of course, really young!  As the evening wound down, the lights went up and the music stopped a thought struck me.  It was a sobering thought, for, I realized there was a piece of history of our little school that was fading away.   It was clear that there existed a chasm in between the classes from the sixties, fifties, forties, thirties and those from the seventies, eighties and nineties.  As another year passed it became clear that new blood was needed in order to carry the torch which symbolizes the spirit and special sense of belonging that we all carry with us from EA.   The gap between the decades needs to be filled.  With that in mind I strongly encourage you all to visit the very informative unofficial EARJ website regularly: http://www.stirlinglaw.com/escola.htm.

Thank you for taking the time to forward this to other ex-EA students and for your attention.  Enormes Beijos e Abracos, Chris Ybarra '87

P.S.   As a first step in carrying the EA spirit into the next millennium and beyond may I suggest visiting the following website to learn more details of the upcoming Reunion/Festa 1985-1990: http://www.buybrazil.com/ea1999/updates.htm
