Oi gênte! Thank you for visiting and helping us matar saudades. "A turma toda" would love it if you would Write A Few Words to our guestbook!  You may need to hit your "reload" button to see your message appear.  "Depois que tu partiste tudo aqui ficou tao triste . . ."  Welcome back.  It's good to hear from you again.   Remember when you promised to write?  Now is your chance.

O galera, que saudade. As a graduate from the class of 92 I went on to graduate from Connecticut College with a double major in International Relations and Latin American Studies. I then moved to London for a year and a half doing a masters, and am now living in Paris working for Microsoft. I seem to have lost contact with most of my friends from EA. Although I am still in touch with Suzanna Lowell (she is teaching in Virginia and still doing theatre acting at night), Jimmy Pannett (working at the World Bank in DC), Sarah Werneck (1st to 11th grade - she has just moved to Mississippi with her husband who is an officer in the marines, she is planning on going to graduate school and was/is? working with autistic children. And of course Danny Smith ('91) who will be moving here in Paris in September. Yahoo. I would love to get back in touch with some people, in particular Yuri Tamori and Valerie Vajay (I know you read this so godammit write to me - Danny keeps forgetting to give me your email), and Raquel Silva. I hear odd gossip here and there mainly via my sister, Laura ('97) who is now living in DC. I go to Rio every now and then...my family is still there and would love to catch up on the fofoca.......in the meantime I am looking forward to watching Brazil win the World Cup again...

Blast from the past or what!! My sister Marilyn (class of 65) clued me into this page. I'm class of 62, would love to hear from anyone... especially anyone involved in any of our crazy mountainerring escapades (Ron Hargreaves, John Frey, etc etc) I have kept up my Spanish (many friends from Chile), but until we visitted Portugal, NOT my Portuguese. Although, I would have trouble with Portugal Portuguese, and then on a bus somewhere in Lisboa, I'd hear real authentic Carioca, and it would come back... I'm currently contracting at Microsoft, have 3 kids and 3 grandkids, and am still going up mountains... Love to hear from anybody....

Through the generous loan of 4 yearbooks from Valarie Vajay and class lists from Jessica Reider Golman and Frank Long (not to mention the steady stream of Alumni Registrations) the alumni database has taken a quantum leap in size - up to over 4300 names.  There is no doubt that using the yearbooks is the key to generating a complete alumni list.  I really appreciate the trust of allowing me to borrow these precious memories for everyone's benefit.  Now I would like to appeal again for the loan of yearbooks I haven't seen (other than '61-'63, '87, '89-'91).  Please call or write first as I have promises of 6 book presently - no need to duplicate.  Bruce should have the latest class lista on line in the near future - check out your class and call an old friend!  Walt '63

Hello All, the sun is shining in Tucson and the only thing we don't have is a beach!!   I will not be making the trip to Monterry for the "other" reunion in July, but I hope everyone enjoys themself.  The Brazilians here are meeting at various Famous Sam Bars to watch the Copo together.  Today, instead, some of us met at Alzira Duncan's house and watched as we ate feijao.  Some of us just live right!   I am driving around town with a full sized Brazilian flag hanging out my car window.  I am trying to show these gringos how to celebrate in style!!!!!!   GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!  Ate logo, Penny

Wow, I'm so excited to be communicating with this special group of people (many of whom I have never met) that share this unbelievable bond with me!!! It's been 10 years since I graduated EA (class of '88!!) and somewhere in the back of my mind I have the most incredible memories of my life: All of the Big 4 trips (back of the bus- bathroom on the bus...) especially the Brasilia ones (those were by plane!:)) Quem se lembra de1986, o time de handball completamente "medicated" na viagem de volta..... Kim, Elaine, Ana Tolda, .... E tambem 1988: Carol Hughes, Sergio coach, Rubens coach, Mike Landers at that nightclub rolling down the ramp... But they weren't all naughty! Lu Duarte and me had awesome times doing yearbook (viramos a noite trancadas dentro do second floor porque Bira disse que seria perigoso demais a gente trabalhar la a noite toda sem trancar as portas!). We literally left school as the buses and cars were bringing everyone in. It was the most beautiful sunrise ever! And the catwalk... I bet everybody remembers it one way or another... Am I giving away too many secrets?? Well, today it's all so different anyway that they couldn't use this against anybody!!! I have two younger brothers (Gregory Reider '97 and Andrew '99 who is still there) so I'm still "a par" of what's happening at EA. Andrew actually is trying to keep intact whatever is left of the old EA as we knew it. The EA he remembers is already so different then that which we do. Unfortunately, most of the staff is not the same and doesn't realize the wonderful traditions we grew up with: no more AAA, no more smoking area (not that I smoked), sports are only about the sport and not the relationships and the whole experience anymore. They are even planning to build a parking lot UNDER THE FIELD!!  Oh, someone asked about the panthers on the tartan wall and over the locker rooms.  They are there, last time I checked.  But who knows how long they'll keep them there.  Is there any way we can influence the future of EA?  I don't even know the influence that the board of directors has anymore.   See, I can go on and on forever about other memories.  I hope that I haven't bored anyone!!  One biggest memory that I'll never forget is Mr. Morse.  He was by far my most favorite person in that time of my life and at school.  He will always be in my heart.  Even as he shook his head as he starred at my cut off shorts that went a LITTLE higher than whatever the required measurement was at the time or when he gave me ONE MORE chance after being late to school over and over again...  He kept that awesome feeling alive.  Um beijao, Jessica

We experienced a major harddrive failure Wednesday.  Sorry for missing the chat session. ALL email and goodies sent to me over the past six months were wiped out!!!   Some things were backed up, but I'm not sure how much.  So, if you are not yet on any of the alumni pages, please submit the alumni registration form under "alumni registration."  Sorry about that.  My wife was upset, too (it was her computer that went down in flames - not mine), but it wasn't my fault.  Honest.

I'm hoping to hear from more of my classmates ('67) and people who were at EA while I was there (i.e., from the classes of 65-69). I've got a question for my classmates: I wonder how many of us are actually working in the area we intended to when we graduated. I'm not and I know a few others aren't either. I suspect that few of us are but I'm curious to hear.

This was a great find and definitely brings a lot of saudades. I can't believe it took me this long to find this site, but I'm glad I did cause I've found a lot of old friends. And I'm always hoping to hear from people, so please feel free to write. I've been married 4 years and hope to start a masters some time in the near future. My husband is in the army, so we don't stay in one place for very long, which makes it harder to get going. Saudacoes aos colegas da EA. I was in the class of 1976, although I left Rio in 1973. I returned to Rio in 1981, married a Brazilian, Renato Moura, and we moved to the Washington, DC, area in 1991. We are in touch with Cathy Bourgeois, Judy Ackley, Michael Strickland and Dr. Brown's family. Renato and I will be in Rio with our kids during the first two weeks of July; we go back at least once a year. If anyone else from the class of 1976 is around, get in touch! I'd love to catch up.

Just thought of a good idea after writing that last message. If you list the names of old friends in the Guestbook, their names will get picked up by the internet search engines. If they ever happen to look for themselves, or if anyone else from EA ever looks for them, they will be dirtected back to the Guestbook, or the Guestbook Archives. They'll then become aware of the EA alumni website, and eventually we'll reel everyone in! Go for it! I just checked "Kirby Willis" and got a bunch of hits, including a couple to this website where his name has been mentioned earlier. It worked for other names tried, too.
Webmaster <bruce@stirlinglaw.com>

Just wrote Randy below an email. The webpage reeled in another old friend from 4th and 5th grade! He's referring to Kirby Willis, Bruce (me), Anita Moss, Barbara Harmon, Debbie Erling, and Eva Kaslowska, all old friends. Jeffrey Richoux, Ricky Bado, and Beverly Rendall would also have known Randy. If Stuart Patterson is out there, the webcrawlers and search engines should find this mention of his name (if he searches for himself), and we'll reel him in! Welcome back, Randy!

I attended 4th and 5th grades during 1961-63 at EO. I had a friend staying at the Oro Verde Hotel in Copacabana during a period of political unrest. I remember traffic jams and armed soldiers directing traffic. I forgot to call my parents to let them know where I was going after school; we lived in Ipanema. They weren't happy. I had good friends I'd love to get in contact with: Stuart Patterson, Kirby, Bruce, Anita, Barbara, Debbie, and Eva.

Hello to everyone at EA, particularly teachers and the class of '91. I have been living in the small country town of Mitsukaido, Ibaraki prefecture, Japan, for the past ten months. I am employed by the Japanese Ministry of Education. Mostly, I work as an English teacher at Mitsukaido Junior High School. I also teach Special Education and adult community classes. I haven't been back to Rio since August of 1995. I may be returning sometime in August this year to visit family. Since graduating from EA, I received a BA from Washington State University in Foreign Languages (French and Spanish), taught ESL in Miami for a year...And now I'm in Japan. As of this September I will be pursuing a MA in French Cultural History from Columbia University (although, the program is in Paris...How terrible!). Emma Grant (class of '92 and one of my best friends) is in Paris doing research for Microsoft. If anyone else from EA is in Paris, please get in touch with me and we can organize a little reunion. I must get back to work now...Not to mention that the use of the internet costs 4 ounces os gold per minute in this country! --Danielle (Danny)(Class "PRINCESS"!!!)

How many EA kids spent their first night in Rio at the Miramar Palace Hotel?  We practically lived there, and since our old house was bulldozed in the 1980's, the hotel is the closest thing to home for me in Rio, apart maybe from climbing up Dois Irmaos. For the rest of you who spent time at the Miramar, check it out. It was originally built to accomodate visitors for the World Cup.  Just click your heels together and say, "there's no place like the Miramar."

Class listing update for May: we added 201 new names through the followup of website postings, reviewing Dave McGuerty's class lists, and the generous loan of 4 year books by Valarie Vajay ('91). Valarie's contribution yielded 107 names for the class of '91 alone and based on that performance I expect to add 700 new names in the near future for classes '87 through '02! Anyone else with yearbooks would sure help the cause if I could borrow them or you could take the time to xerox pages or list names by class for me. Year books I have reviewed now are '60, '62, ' 63, '87, '89, '90, and '91. I NEED HELP ON THE OTHER YEARS! So, here's the current status (you can now download these right from the website- I tried it and it works great!): '35-1, '40-4, '41-2, '42-1, '43-10, '44-27, '45-24, '46-15, '47-22, '48-11, '49-3, '50-15, '51-3, '52-8, '53-4, '54-10, '55-8, '56-43, '57-9, '58-5, '59-44, '60-14, '61-44, '62-49, '63-93, '64-88, '65-147, '66-113, '67-107, '68-168, ' 69-198, '70-169, '71-114, '72-169, '73-153, '74-168, '75-173, '76-118, '77-134, '78-71, '79-54, '80-36, '81-88, '82-14, '83-84, '84-8, '85-21, '86-22, '87-17, '88-14, '89-13, '90-26, '91-110, '92-11, '93-15, '94-2, '95-16, '96-10, '97-74, '01-2. Years not listed have no names on file. GRAND TOTAL = 3196! This will probably be the last month to report status by year since the files are now accessible. I will continue to report totals. Please keep those names (and other publishable information) coming in! Also, call or write an old friend to spread the word about the website!

In case anyone was wondering... yes, we were one of the many thousand expats evacuated out Jakarta to Singapore. Just like the movies - only surreal, scary, and numbing. We're fine, our neighborhood and house was not looted however a lot of stores nearby were looted or torched. None of the dependents that work for oil companies are allowed back until school starts in August. We were just getting ready to move to Balikpapan, Indonesia (on Borneo) when this started. I'm going back next week to pack up the house. If anyone wants to send a message before I pack up the computer - please do. I know a bunch of people have called the house or my parents and we appreciate it. Bruce, I'll continue the "fun with scanning" project after the summer.

Even though I didn't graduate at EA, I studied there from kindergarden through the 11th grade. . .  I practically stayed there for 12 long years!!!  I would like to have my name on the list for I made great friends there, and I'm anxious to hear from them.  Congratulations for this fantastic site!!!  You made people feel close again!!!  This is a smart and easy way to kill the "SAUDADES."   Thank-you for your work on putting all of EA together again!!! Class of 1980.

So where are all of the EA Time Line messages? We had two "saudade" letters yesterday. How about a few more? How about some EA Time Lines? Those I don't even have to get involved with, you just type in your own contos (stories) and hit enter. E muito facil, gente!

Hi! This is Mercy Stirling [the webmaster's sister, EA Class of '69  -- OK - I've done my part by posting her email].

I am sending this to all my friends on the Internet. I hope you can pass this information on to friends who might like to contribute in some way to our cause, blankets for newborn babies in Guadalajara, Mexico.   Blankies....I still have the blankets that Vanessa and Marcela got when they were babies.  Blankets not only keep you warm, snugly, and secure but also can be placed on the floor for you to stretch, wiggle and roll on.  And later, when you are older, you hang on to them like Linus in Peanuts, for a little security. . . we all know how important "blankies" are!  Please add your own note to the email when you forward it to your friends who might be able to help.  Sometimes on the Internet you are not sure that what you are reading is true!  Please feel free to email, write or call!  Our website is under construction [http://www.mexweb.com/jslg.htm], but I hope you check it out! Thank you, I hope that you can support our great program.

Mercy Stirling de Duenas Av.Primaveras #99 aptdo 7 Rancho Contento Cd. Granja, Zapopan 45010 Mexico (523) 682-0279 fax 616-1116

Contact me (mduenas@infosel.net.mx) or you can contact Luzmila (mherran@vianet.com.mx).

Come on America!!  I know you can help us!!  Saludos from Guadalajara, Mexico.  The Junior Service League of Guadalajara (http://www.mexweb.com/jslg.htm) is collecting baby blankets for its program,"Mi Bebe y Yo," at the Nuevo Hospital Civil in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Our volunteer program "Mi Bebe y Yo" promotes breast feeding education and basic baby care for the more than 60 new moms and their babies that are born DAILY at the hospital.   The hospital is a "Hospital Amigo" - a UNICEF program - to promote breast feeding starting at the moment the baby is born.

Many of the babies that leave the hospital, do so wrapped in old clothes or scraps of clothes since their mothers can not afford a blanket for them. Occasionally the hospital has blankets they can use during their stay, but normally they are wrapped in sheets during their stay. They are not allowed to take the sheet with them.

Do you think you might know of a group of women in your community willing to make flannel blankets for newborns, knit, crochet or perhaps organize a fund raiser to send donations to the League in Guadalajara for us to purchase them locally?  Kelly Bishop High School from Boise, Idaho, organized a fundraiser called "Pennies from Heaven" and were able to send us a check to purchase blankets for the babies.  With more than 60 babies born daily, you can see how this needs to be an ongoing fundraiser!  The American Legion wives in Guadalajara - in Las Fuentes - also get together once a week and sit chat while they sew little blankets for the Hospital.  We are grateful for their contribution!! Please see our page http://www.mexweb.com/jslg.htm with more information about the League and the projects in Guadalajara.  We know that you may want to know more about our program and would be more than happy to answer any of your questions.  We are a non-profit organization (A.C. - Associacion Civil) in Mexico and affiliated with the Junior League of the United States.  We are currently a "Junior Service League" in the process of becoming a full-fledged world League member.

The following program was written by Francie Martinez, a friend of our Junior Service League in Guadalajara.  We are grateful for the support she has given us and also to all of her students at the Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Idaho for their wonderful donation to our program.  They are an example of of what the energy and generosity of the American youth can do for others!  Please send this on to your friends who you think might be able to support our blanket project.  Many people want to help in this world but sometimes don't know where to start!  The newborn babies need your support!  Please have them contact Luzmila Herran, our Junior Service League Project coordinator for "Mi Bebe y Yo" at mherran@vianet.com.mx.

BLANKETS FOR THE BABIES A baby sleeps and shivers, a mother fills with sorrow, they desperately need a blanket, but there aren’t enough to borrow.  Some women receive quilts, to wrap their little ones, but many others who need them, find that they get none.  They are all very poor and must work with what they’ve got, but judging by what I’ve seen, they haven't got a lot.  So now we must pitch in and lend a helping hand, by making blankets for children who are suffering in another land.   With all that we have here, we can give this and more, spend an extra minute sewing to keep those babies warm.  So the next time you think of someone's lives you've touched, remember that the Guadalajara women thank you all very much.

Hey "Chief,"
My name is Guido Lemos and I attended EA from 1973-1986, from where I left to UNC-Chapel Hill for 4 years; and back to EA for another 2 years as a HS teacher (Econ. M.U.N., History & Algebra). For the past six years, however, I´ve been a stock broker selling Brazilian investment ideas to foreign institutional investors.
In 1996, my classmates and I managed to organize a highly successful reunion in Rio. The event was a night barbecue with the presence of about 75% of our class, plus a large number of staff members, under & upperclassmen. I think your idea is wonderful and would like to help you carry it out, if I can be of assistance. I keep in close touch with my classmates, plus the EA community, since my 2 year old daughter will be starting at EA next year. Always good to hear from one of ours!!
All the best,
Guido

Hello! Thanks for the quick reply. Both Becky (my wife) and I did graduate from EA. There is one other couple of EA grads who are married, from the same timeframe: Arthur Byrnes and Eva Helberg. Artie was in our class, and Eva was '64 or '65, I believe. They live in NYC. There are several other folks who live in the DC area, for whom I will endeavor to get addresses to you. We stay in touch with quite a few of our classmates. I love your Miss Collares page!! She was one of my favorites! In one of Ruth Stanton's productions, or maybe it was a senior skit on the teachers, I sang a song, "I'm in love with Miss Collares". Wow, what memories! Thanks again!! Bill

Some of you obviously have a lot to add to the EA Web and the EA WEBRING that is starting to take shape. Most of you have anywhere from 2MB to 10MB of space (that's a lot) available FREE from your Internet provider. You're already paying for it and probably not even using it.

The rest of you have at least 6MB of FREE space available to you through http://www.geocities.com, which provides FREE websites to all interested persons around the world. Such a deal. So, feeling frustrated and left out? Make your own webpage(s), post your old photos, lembrancas, etc. and help make this site complete. Anyone needing help, just ask.

Tenho muitas saudades do Rio e lembro da escola com muito carinho, nao tem lugar no mundo que se compare. The Bulletin Board shows the Class of 1987 is organizing a Reunion for 1999. Check it on the hyperlink on "webmaster,", or go to http://www.livkaizen.com.br/festaing.htm.   There appears to be a 1987 class email list, too.   Note, however, there is no link back to this homepage.  You'll have to use your "BACK" button on the browser to return.

"PROFANITY NEVER MADE A MAN OUT OF A BOY"... who wrote this on the men's P.E. locker room anyway? nevermind.. What's up you guys? how have you all been doing? I am an alumni from the CLASS OF 95' (aka: another class with no official senior yearbook). Isn't it great that the information highway is bringing us back together again? It has been great to hear from all of you once more. There are some people from our class that have been still hanging out together: me, alex, deni freitas, henry, renatom, be, phillip zola, sorrentino, betinho, lohman. We also have some good friends in the class of '94 and '96. It would be great to hear from people that went to school with us but did not make it to graduation. We'll try to spread the word about this site to those we still have contact...on the meantime: GO PANTHERS GO! (???!!!) see ya! PS: we were thinking about re-creating the "Caneco 95" page, we'll keep you updated about this..
