This is the online
home of Gangfurd (photos
below), an original 1965 Cal 28 raised deck sailboat, hull
number 82. Her former name was Pirate. While this
site is dedicated to the original California 28, popularly known
as the Cal 28, designed by Bill Lapworth, it is also a celebration of all Cal Boats (click
link to see them all). Scroll down the page for links to all
Cal Boat models. Cal 28s were originally manufactured by Jack
Jensen at his Jensen Marine Corporation. Jenson Marine
was famous for its Cal brand boats. The company’s boats in 1965
were: The Cal 20, Cal 25, Cal 28, Cal
34, Cal 36 and, of course, the Cal 40—literally
a hall of fame lineup. With her fin keel, spade rudder and lightweight,
the Cal 28 was the proto-type for the the radical rudder and
fin keel on her larger American Sailboat Hall of Fame sister, the Cal
40. The Cal 28 was the first Lapworth design to
incorporate the spade rudder.
"We did that on the 28. We wanted to do it before we went ahead
and put the tooling into the 40-footer," according
to Lapworth.

The Cal 28 is a true classic racer/cruiser. The choice of true sailors and
collectors who can't afford a Cal 40, the Cal 28 is fairly
rare in captivity. If you owned, or are the current owner of
a Cal 28, we would love to hear from you. We would also
like to receive any photos you have of a Cal 28, including any
original documentation that came with the boat when purchased new.
The original raised deck
Cals were the Cal 20, the
Cal 2-24, the Cal 25, and
the Cal 28. Apparently, there was also a single Cal 40 raised deck made, the famous White Squall. Cal Boat owners and others
are invited to submit log entries about Cal Boats to our Sailing Log. See
Cal Boat brochures and manuals here.
