American School Ex-Alumni Go Online

"Anybody believing that an electronic student reunion is an idea whose time has come need look no further than Guadalajara’s American School. Though the school itself will not be on-line until next year, some of the alumni just couldn’t wait to begin an electronic flow of messages and reminiscences.

The guiding figure of a group that has dubbed itself the “Guad Squad” is former student, Bruce Stirling, now a Phoenix, Arizona, attorney. He has set up a homepage on the World Wide Web to reunite all ex-alumni.

So far, the project has been eminently successful. In the first week, more than 25 people sent emails to Stirling, who has posted them on the homepage. Stirling’s sister, Mercy Duenas, also a former American School student and a Guadalajara residents says, “Bridgette Herrera at the American School is very jazzed up about the whole thing, and hopefully enough people will sign up later to be able to set a date for a big reunion.”

Even more sanguine is class of ‘70 graduate Laurie White McClung, who emailed that it “looks like it may be starting to snowball.”

Reflecting the school’s tendency to recruit students from far-flung destinations, letters to the homepage have come from Alaska, Alburquerque, New Mexico, British Colombia, Gainesville, Florida, England, Tallahassee, Florida, Calais, Maine and such local destinations as Las Fuentes and Zapopan. Among the messages to Stirling was one that ended with the salutation: “Your old partying buddy, Bill (Clinton).”

According to Stirling, the homepage is "for anyone who ever taught at, worked at, attended, or was merely a friend of the school (any part of the school)!"

The site also includes a link to the The Guadalajara Colony Reporter web site. Those who want more information may contact Esmeralda Prieto in Guadalajara at 642-0182.

The homepage address is http://www.stirlinglaw.com/escuela.htm."
