Feb. 21, 2001. Hola Todos! Just want to give a brief update on the Andresen-Stoddard get together. For those of you with foggy memories or "old-timers" disease, I'm Pam Andresen (now Simpson) and went to ASG from 1966-71, when I graduated. My very best friend in 1966-68 was Debbie Stoddard. We were in 7th & 8th grade together. Deb & I lost contact with each other after the Christmas of 1970. Thanks to this fabulous website, many re-connected friendships and Classmates.com we found each other last fall. After many hours on the phone we finally crossed paths. I spent last weekend, Feb 15-18 at her house in Montrose, CO. We have each aged some (after 32 years) and put on a pound here & there (me more than her) but deep inside we were the same crazee girls. We had so much fun going through yearbooks, reading all the messages and just reminiscing about our years in Guad. We decided we weren't as bad as we thought - just 2 girls growing up. We definitly want a BIG reunion with ALL of you. Laurie, Juanita and the Stirling crew have done a fantastic job reuniting all of us. Let's keep the spirit going. Since the attack of Sept 11th we can appreciate how precious and short a human life really is. Let's not let, what was probably the most important times of our lives, fade away with age. We have to keep the memories alive! Anyway, it was great getting back with Debbie. I know seeing the rest of you will be equally as rewarding. (I have to also let you know that Candi Lesh & I tried to get together in Jan. in Wichita, KS but an ice storm kept us apart). John Rhodes also contacted me right before I left and sent me his self-published book on poetry. It was wonderful!! Let's not let ice, old age or anything else keep us apart any longer. God bless you all- Pam Andresen Simpson

bensbunch@msn.com (Tammie McBride Hathcock (Mamut)) To: ASGlumni@stirlinglaw.com Hi, I put my maiden name....its McBride. I was the oldest of 4 who attended the American School. My sister Kelly, my brother Gary and my sister Monica. My dad was a medical student. I left after my 7th grade year, but we all have such good memories of our time there. We were there from 1966 to 1971. I graduated in 1976. My mom would take us to school in our big camper and the "Kodak" bus would follow us yelling Mamut....does anyone remember that! I would love to find Kathy Watson, and a lot of the Kodak kids that we were friends with. We once won the Halloween contest as the "Pumkin Patch." My mom put real pumkins on our heads and we had vines hanging all over us! My sister once won when she was painted all green. Does anyone remember that?! Well it would be fun to hear from anyone who was in school with me during that time!

Kathleen Mulligan and Mark Judge taught at ASG in 196/87.  We were neophyte teachers straight out of university and just married.  I taught English, Mark taught Phys Ed and Health.  We have tons of fond memories of that year.  In particular I remember a great grade 9 English class with a girl named Azalea. We would love to hear from Joan or Newton or Martha or the other teachers we spent so much time with. Remember that trip when they stole our rental car!  We live in NZ now and have been for 11 years.  Have one child and both teach at a girls school, me music, Mark is a permanent reliever.  Good life.  Cheers K and M

Hi Everyone!  Wow, this is so neat!  I went to the American School from 1970-1974...(I'm in the class of 1978) Most of you remember me as Leslie Michels' little sister....well, I'm taller than her now!!  We moved to La Jolla, CA in 1974 and I've been in San Diego ever since!  I am now 39, engaged to be married in August, and work for an advertising agency downtown as National Sales Director.  Still spending a lot of time with my music as well....re-visiting my singing career on the side which I spent a great deal of time with in the 80's (jazz).  So, life is GREAT.  I hear a rumor of a reunion in October... I gotta figure out how to make it .... I welcome anyone's notes who feel like writing to me!  Guadalajara is something that I always tell people about...it is the best thing my parent's EVER did for my sister and I.  I still speak Spanish any chance I get.  I saw a few Guad friends recently here in SD, and it was a deja vu....I was transported back to that 14 year old for a few magic moments with these people.  Probably the coolest time of my entire life...look forward to hearing from you guys, love Hil Hilary Michels 1131 Magellan Way Chula Vista, CA 91910 (619) 482-8770 HiMichels@aol.com

Comments: My very first memory of life was in this school (pre-kindergarten), with my older sister, Christie.  I remember how she pulled a chair out for me and told me to sit on it - just like the teacher had told all the other students to do.  That's probably the only nice thing she did for me in all of my twenty-one years, anyway.  Kudos to this school for providing me with a nice flashback!

Comments: CLASS OF 90, WHERE ARE YOU??? You'd think us young whipper- snappers would be a little more "with it" on this web site!  Hi, I'm Julie Bloem, and I spent my senior year in ASFG in 1990.  It was an AMAZING year -- I know I got myself grounded for at least half of it! But my parents love Guad and have never left, so I go back as often as possible.  I now live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and was crushed to find out I missed the San Antonio reunion in February!  I sort of assumed I would never see my classmates again (we were never very organized!) but after seeing what y'all have accomplished, perhaps there's hope for a 10-year reunion after all.  We had a "mini-reunion" with a few ASFG friends last summer...coincidentally, also in San Antonio.  My brother John, Marco and Julio "House" Galvan, and Marcy and Monica (I forget you crazy girls' last names!) had a RIOT watching old videos and pictures of us...then we called up Andy Zuniga in Kansas at 3am and totally tripped him out!  "Hey Andy, guess who this is???" Anyway, I'll be returning here often, so anyone from 1989-1994 who wants to get back in touch, email me!

Comments: What a great site!  Although I feel as though my generation of ASG graduates hasn't caught on to the technological age.  I graduated in '86, and I haven't seen many of my old classmates listed.  I'd hate to think that we were that slow, although I can think of a couple of faculty that thought so.  I think of my old classmates often, and wonder where they are.  Even teachers, who I swore I didn't care about, enter into my thoughts - fondly!  Those days shooting hoops with Mark Argenziano after school, living next to Newton McCurdy, dating Marcela Ellerbrock, bugging Ms. Basom and Mr. Conrad, having a blast in Mrs. Rhen's "Great Books" class.  Wow, so many great memories, tugs at the strings of my heart to think about them so vividly.  Pics of the school look great!

Comments: Hey everyone...I just saw the documentary that was made regarding the San Patricio soldiers from Ireland that fought with Mexico during the Mexican American war.  I saw it at a special showing at the American School in Guadalajara. It was excellent. The English teacher, Michael Hogan, wrote two books on the subject and now they have made a documentary that will be shown on PBS on March 17th. You really should watch it...it will help with the understanding of why some Mexicans says that the Americans "stole" half of Mexico. It is really good and the idea that the American School and its teacher have their input is wonderful!! Check it out!! The following is an excerpt that I got off the Internet that gives you an idea of what it is all about. I had never heard of these guys til I met Michael!! Someone let Fineburg know!! THE IRISH SOLDIERS OF MEXICO** by Michael Hogan (Guadalajara, Mexico: Fondo Editorial Universitario, 1997) Reviewed by James Fogarty* Every since the end of the U.S.-Mexican War (1846-48) U.S. historians have taken pains to dismiss the Irish soldiers of the San Patricio Battalion as a bizarre group of malcontents and ne'er-do-wells who deserted from the U.S. Army, lured by drink, pretty senoritas and/or promises of generous rewards from Mexican officials. Thanks to the scholarly research of Michael Hogan in his new book, ital The Irish Soldiers of Mexicoital, there is a much more balanced and objective analysis of the San Patricio phenomenon. Hogan, a history professor at the American School in Guadalajra, Mexico, puts to rest the above stereotypes and proves conclusively that the San Patricos were, in fact, one of the most disciplined, courageous and effective units in the war. Hogan also debunks the myth that the battalion was made up exclusively of deserters from the U.S. Army and points out that the known deserters represented only about a third of the total membership, while the majority were in fact European or Mexican citizens, and not citizens of the United States. Of the 120 known members, 40 were born in Ireland and 18 others, born in the U.S., Canada, or Great Britain, had Irish surnames. Hogan also shows that the San Patricios felt comfortable using the rituals and symbolism of Catholicism as expressed in Mexico, and were willing to fight to the death for what was obviously the losing side. The San Patricios also had Irishmen in key leadership positions and they carried a banner on which was inscribed Erin go Braugh (sic), along with an image of St. Patrick and the harp of Erin. Religion was a major issue in the conflict which has been ignored or glossed over by many historians. Hogan writes about how the invading U.S. Army deliberately bombarded Catholic cathedrals, churches and convents in Mexico; and U.S. soldiers often brutally interrupted Masses, processions and other religious services. Hogan quotes a Mexican newspaper which condemned the "savage outrages" to which the condemned San Patricios were subjected to by U.S. Army officials: "Mexicans, these are the men that call us barbarians and tell us that they have come to civilize us. These men who have sacked our homes, taken our daughters, camped in our holy burial places, covered themselves in blasphemous uproar with the ornaments of our altars--and have gotten drunk from our sacred chalices." As for the formation of the battalion, Hogan suggests that the decision to join the Mexican side was probably due more to impulse and emotion like many of Ireland's rebellions, including the Easter Uprising of 1916. "Nevertheless," he concludes that the courage of the San Patricios, their sense of loyalty to their new cause and their continuous allegiance to Mexico even after whippings, brandings and imprisonment, forged an indelible seal of honor on their sacrifice." Finally, Hogan reminds us of the affinity that existed, and continues to exist, between the Irish and the Mexicans due to a shared historical experience of struggle to preserve their unique identities, despite repeated and sometimes brutal attempts by their more powerful neighbors to destroy that identity. * James "Jaime" O'Fogarty is a retired Roman Catholic priest from Co. Tipperary, Ireland who was the first president of the Irish Society of Mexico. He lives in Mexico City.

Sergio and I only recognized Bruce and Scot in the video!! I believe that Alan should run for something as he has the gift of the gab and so does Laurie!! Bruce on the other hand handed over that mike like it was a hot churro... Is my brother the best or WHAT!!?? Anyway...everyone here in Gdl. got soooo jazzed by the reunion that they want to have it here next time...We figured you can get a LOT more pachanga for your money in Gdl...so they are already thinking of how to pull it together here next time...you know...Mariachis, trios, discos, restaurants, Gemma y lonches...trips to jump in Minerva, San Juan de Dios....tours of the school...etc. etc. So....keep that in mind!! Someone mentioned that they were a bit concerned about security in Gdl. and everyone wanted them to know that even though we are almost 6 million people that it is still "our Guadalajara"...you walk down Chapultepec and you feel like you never left!! So, hey!! keep it in mind and start thinking of dates!! There will be THAT many more if it is done here....think of all the prepa and comercio kids that would like to go!! Bueno, saludos...and congrats to all...I will go chew some purple gum that tastes like perfume for all of you!! Mercy

People were just generally nice folks trying to survive teenagehood in a foreign culture. Maybe that is why I feel so very close to you all. My own cousins will never fully understand who I am, and why I am, because so much of that was influenced by Guadalajara. But you do. Ojala que nos vemos pronto!

My only regret is not having enough time to spend with all of you, being tied up most of the time doing the coordinating stuff with the other Planning Team Members. I wish we could all get together again next weekend....but, alas, the juxtaposition of the memories of the past with the realities of the present is upon us. As for the future, I hope that those who attended have found some of those past memories and can rekindle those lost friendships. Comments: One year ago, 4 people sat in an office in Sunnyvale, CA wondering how many people we could scrounge up all over the world for a 1st ever American School of Guadalajara Reunion. Worst case we figured 12. Best case, we figured we could get 25. Today we have about 60 confirmed attendees including significant others. They are coming from as close as a few miles away in San Antonio, and as far away as Alaska! We have representatives from each graduating year from 1969 through 1983 (with the exception of 1982). The current ASG Administrator, Robert Trent, will be there as will at least 3 teachers. The reunion is still 3 weeks away, and it would be great if we could hit 75 attendees! Keep those cards and letters coming, alumni! (We could use more representatives from the classes of '71 and '72, by the way, and you know who you are!) Catch you February 5th!

Comments: Well, here we go again. This is the third time I try this. Let's hope it goes through. I taught the 4th/5th grades at ASG from 1973 to 1976. I was thrilled to learn of your web page. I have many fond memories of Guad and the ASG. I'd love to hear from my former students and anyone who remembers me. Unfortunately, I will not be able to make the reunion this year. I have not been back to Guad since I left but I do miss it and hope to return some day with my husband. The only person with whom I have kept in contact is my good friend and the former AV person at ASG, Peggy Mahan. Good luck y saludos de Nueva York!

Comments: Hi Paul! This is getting too exciting for words! More people who have registered for the reunion: Mark Olsson, Christy Shaw (Mayfield). The Holiday Inn at Market Square says they will charge the same rate for single or double occupancy. If you are looking for someone to share a room at the reunion, let me know. We'll see if we can't hook you up with someone. BTW, Christy Shaw says they recently told her there are only 6 more rooms available at the ASG reunion discount rate.
